Information design in 1939

October 3, 2009

This is a treasure for anyone with an interest in information design.  A color volume from 1939 entitled Graphic Presentation by Willard Cope Brinton.  A collage from Prof. Michael Stoll’s Flickr photostream is shown below.

The book is packed with vintage hand-drawn infographics.  I’m not a computer historian but I suspect the words “desktop publishing” had a slightly different meaning in 1939.  In spite of the technology available at the time, the graphics are hauntingly modern and their quality, I’m certain, would even draw praise from Tufte.

Best of all, this fascinating work is out of copyright so your complementary PDF version of the book may be downloaded here thanks to the good people at Internet Archive.
